Many of us have two Dads to celebrate on Father's Day. This post is for your Dad, Dad-Dad, Grandpa, Opa.
It is hard work being a Father, I can see that clearly now. I can only imagine the trials ahead as a parent. For my Dad, I think about how intricately our everyday interactions have shaped me into the person I am today. My core values and moral compass, my hopes and my dreams. That job doesn't stop once Father's turn into Grandpa's. Children still need to be parented and grandchildren need to be spoiled.
One of those core values is my respect and reverence for Mother Nature, the Great Outdoors We grew up going backpacking in the Sierra Nevadas, understanding what it meant to live without needing much. (No tent for the Barnum kids!) Granted, we never stayed out too long and always came home to the great comforts of civilization. But the ideals of taking care of our planet came through strongly. Over Uno cards we had some pretty serious conversations worthy of Neil deGrasse Tyson; discussing science, questioning society and history, and talking through some serious scenarios to help us prepare for the reality of grown-up Life. (My Catholic school leaders would have been appalled to hear these conversations.)
This year a great backpacking reunion will be taking place shortly after Father's Day and right around Dad's birthday:
When putting together my Dad-Dad list, I wanted to choose things my Dad my actually use. These are upgraded pieces of things he has had or wished he had. Cast-iron skillet may not be a great backpacking partner, but a cooking expert Grandpa can never have too many of those!
It seems like a awful lot of Dads are into camping, backpacking, hiking and the outdoors. This gift list may be useful for those Dads. Even if your Father isn't getting camping gear, it is important to take some time to pay homage to your relationship with your Father, or the Man who played that role in your life. In my case I will be thinking about sacrifices made, goals reached and possibly yet to be accomplished, lessons taught and Love given.
